Activism - what can you do?
The climate crisis is an existential threat. It is a fact that recent climate change is man-made, and is having effects significantly faster than background geological, natural, changes. There are tipping points such as world forests becoming net emitters of CO2 rather than CO2 sinks – we don’t know for certain when these tipping points might be reached, or if for some it is already too late. A study published in Nature Medicine estimated that climate change has already killed 4 million people globally since 2000 from malnutrition, floods, malaria and more. The World Health Organisation estimates that between 2030 and 2050 there will be 250,000 additional deaths per year from malnutrition, malaria, diarrhoea and heat stress alone, and there are already 7 million premature deaths per year due to air pollution, largely caused by polluting energy systems. These estimates are probably conservative, and don’t include any of the impacts on non-human life.
It is never to late to act, every fraction of a degree of heating prevented will make a difference to people’s suffering, and the reduction of fossil fuel burning in any form will make people’s lives healthier.

Extinction Rebellion formed in 2018 and is active in the UK and globally. There are local and national groups, with plenty of actions for anyone to join in with, in person or online.

You have probably heard of Just Stop Oil - their aim is to end fossil fuels before they end us - there are plenty of ways to get involved. Part of the A22 Network of activist groups around the world.

Zero Hour is the campaign group behind the Climate and Nature (CAN) Bill - a plan for a new UK law that addresses the full extent of the climate and nature crisis in line with the most up-to-date science. 100 Day campaign running now.

#StopRosebank is the campaign to stop the development of a planned new oil field 80 miles off the Shetland coast. If the development goes ahead the extraction alone would exceed emissions reductions targets, and researchers have said that new oil and gas is not needed if governments deliver on clean energy promises.

Yellow Dot Studios is a non-profit media studio set up to challenge big oil disinformation and climate inaction. The videos are entertaining and cutting (and scientifically accurate). Find them on youtube and tiktok.

HOPE not hate is a campaign group and the UK's leading anti-fascist organisation. Their aim is to monitor and challenge the far right, engage in the communities that are susceptible to them, and address the issues and policies which give rise to them. With increasing climate-migration this will be an increasingly important issue.

Stay Grounded is a global network of more than 200 member organisations campaigning for a reduction of aviation and its negative impacts on climate and health, replacing it with greener alternatives and behavioural change.
